JCK Heats Up Under the Tucson Sun

Tucson, AZ (February 4, 2016) — JCK Tucson welcomed jewelry and gem lovers en masse to its oasis-like enclave at the JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort & Spa yesterday. In its third year, the show is boasting major improvements including a new look with new booth structures, lounges, and a signature coffee shop creating an environment that is both upscale and casual. The designer ballroom features inspired collections by brand names including: Todd Reed, Alishan, Kurtulan Designs, Boaz Kashi, Aaron Henry, Dorian & Rose, and Nina Nguyen to name a few. "I was excited to see the new look and feel of JCK Tucson. It combines the right mix of what you hope to find in Tucson and the quality you expect to find from JCK," stated Lisa Bridge, Ben Bridge.

JCK's renewed focus on design is supported by inspiring events happening throughout the week. The event schedule kicked off Wednesday with "Inside the Designers Studio" fireside chat featuring famed designers Sarah Graham and Todd Reed, moderated by JCK Magazine's Editor-In-Chief , Victoria Gomelsky. The adoring standing-room only crowd listened intently as the master talents shared their business acumen. "The setting is incredible, it's a fantastic mix of artists and we love the educational element that JCK added to the show. When I think of the roster of talent I've worked with over the years, Todd Reed and Sarah Graham immediately come to mind when I think of comradery and sharing information. They are both such smart business people and it was a great decision to have them lead us in a fireside chat that created warmth and collaboration," commented Patti Cogswell, Squash Blossom.

"I thought the show was very clean, put together and that the designers exhibiting were very talented," said Todd Reed. "JCK pulled together a really awesome group of jewelers. It was good to see everyone," added Sarah Graham.

Sarah Graham at Fireside Chat
With the theme of design at the forefront of JCK Tucson's showing, a new hosted retailer program helped to bring in some of the most design-savvy stores in the country, including Squash Blossom, Aaron Faber Gallery, Broadmoor Jewelry Company, Patina Gallery, and I. Gorman. The trip is undoubtedly attractive with multiple jewelry events taking place in the area. JCK, understanding the amount of business there is to do during Tucson Gem Week, has made spa-like features and conveniences—not least of which include transportation between shows, morning hikes and meditation, and s'mores by the fire pit– a large component of its show experience.

Fireside Chat with Todd Reed & Sarah Graham moderated by Victoria Gomelsky
JCK Tucson exhibits continue through the weekend (closing Sunday, February 7 at 4:00 pm) with a roster of synergistic events. Today will feature the UncommonGoods Design Challenge where the three finalists: Ayesha Mayadas, Kurtulan Designs and Majestic Art Jewelry will present to a panel of judges competing for a contract with the design-centric e-tailer. Friday night will include a special screening of the documentary Sharing the Rough, which follows the life of a gemstone, promising a truly unique viewing experience set under the starlit desert sky with a & Q&A with the film's director following the premiere.

From German Artist Dunne
"In planning for our third edition of JCK Tucson, we formed a Design Advisory Board who could speak to the unique needs of a show in Tucson. Listening to industry icons, we built this special event specifically with the discerning designer in mind," said Katie Dominesey, Industry Vice President of JCK Events. "We are ecstatic to be able to offer an oasis in Tucson at the JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort & Spa where retailers and designers can connect in a fun, relaxed way".

I was walking the Holidome yesterday with Mark Anderson and Ann Marie.

Ann Marie stopped at a gem dealer's booth that none of us knew - I love that about Ann Marie, she is always willing to take a chance on a new person if she likes his personality and his knowledge of gems.

I want to introduce you to him because he is very special - his family has been selling moonstone for generations....he is a wealth of information on Moonstone, Ethiopian Opal and Labradorite (but not limited to those three).

So now that the flurry of shows has ended - lets take a leisurely trip through the Tucson Gem Show...

Coming from California the gas prices were a bit of a shocker...in a good way!

On arrival - I was happily surprised by the sweet little "casita" that I found that was more than big enough for Ann Marie and I for a week, and spacious for me for the second week!

We even had gemmy soap!

The owners are art teachers - so extremely cool!   ....and then there were the fabulous faces that said goodbye every morning and hello every evening!

So now - on with the shows....

INDIANAS9FOSSILS
http://www.indiana9fossils.com/

I love this company - they have a great assortment and things that will get your kids excited about dinosaurs and fossils....love this from their website:

Indiana9 Fossils is a family owned and operated business that is located outside of DeSoto, Missouri. As a child growing up I was always fascinated by dinosaurs and wanted to be a Paleontologist when I grew up. Well, God had a different plan for me and I became a professional Paramedic/Firefighter in 1981. As an adult my interest in dinosaurs and fossils was rekindled and I began buying and collecting fossils as a hobby. In 1997 I conceived the idea of starting my own fossil business by selling off duplicates of my own fossils to help support my fossil addiction. At the time I had started buying Mazon Creek Nodules off of eBay and decided to ask one of my favorite sellers (Brian) to allow me to build a website for him to sell his fossils on as well as my duplicates...until Brian decided to bow out of the endeavor and left me to develop the website and my fossil business on my own. Now, many people still ask "If you live in Missouri why are you called Indiana9 Fossils"? Well the answer is quite simple. My buddy Brian's eBay user ID was "Indiana9" because he lived in Indiana. After we started the business I took the eBay user ID of "Indiana9 Fossils" and had started visiting fossils shows, etc.. and people got used to the name. By the time Brian bowed out, the name had been out there long enough that I was "branded" and changing the name was not a good option. So we are Indiana9 Fossils from Missouri! In 2004 I was forced to retire early from the Fire Department due to injuries received during a rescue, which allowed me to go full-time in building my business.. and grow it did! In 2010 I hired my son Christopher to work for me full-time and hired his wife Lisa to work for me part-time. Together we have worked to build the business to the point where by April 27th 2015 it was arguably the largest web-based fossil business in the world. Then tragedy struck. An electrical fire totally destroyed the business causing us to lose our entire inventory. But through the love and support of our family and friends in the fossil world, hard work and dedication and blessings from above we have started to rebuild our business and begin the long journey back to where we were.. Thank you for coming along with us on that journey. Merv

OK - down to real fossil business....

OK - I feel really bad....I can't remember this dealer's name - I buy from them every year!
Will update as I receive info

And because Tucson is a constantly evolving show, we've even added two new venues to our program this year - The Granada Gallery and the annually-changing Special Mineral Exhibit at The University of Arizona's Flandrau Center.

In addition to this, Jeff Scovil returns, once again, with his Top Ten Tucson Photos for 2016 as well as all the great interviews you're used to seeing from The Hotel Tucson City Center (aka InnSuites Show), the Pueblo Gem & Mineral Show, the Fine Minerals International House, the Westward Look Showand the TGMS Show (aka The Main Show).

And this year also marks the start of a special arrangement BlueCap Productions made with the TGMS. For the first time ever, we were allowed to be on the floor of the TGMS Show after hours, and under Police escort, to film some of their outstanding exhibits WITH THE CASE GLASS REMOVED!!!

This has given us some of the best footage and photos we've ever been able to shoot of these exhibits (look for more footage of these exhibits to be released shortly).

We're working with them to try and make this an annual occurrence so that the entire mineral worldcan benefit from these images for years to come.

So with all of that packed on to 2-DVDs, is it any wonder that this is the "HOTTEST" DVD in the mineral world?

In this session, Arthur Skuratowciz offers some common "red flags" to help you uncover all of the problem areas in a piece of jewelry. He'll also suggest some handy tips to ensure those repairs go as smoothly as possible.

Proof of Provenance
MARICOPA ROOM1:00 - 2:00 p.m.
Klemens Link, Director of Development, Gübelin Gem Lab, New York
Beginning - Intermediate - Advanced
Consumers request more transparency on the provenance of the goods and services they purchase, and also applies to luxury products including gemstones. In stark contrast to this demand, the gemstone trade has a reputation of being opaque. No proper solutions are in place today that truly close this gap: the classical, gemology-based origin determination offered by gem labs merely states the country of origin, and cannot distinguish different producers mining the same geologic unit. Some mining companies have started to issue certificates of provenance, offering information such as the name of the mine, the mining company, and the mining period. The information provided in these documents, however, is largely based on self-declaration, i.e. is not an independent proof of provenance.
Rediscovering the Chivor Emerald Mine -
In the Footsteps of Peter W. Rainier
MOHAVE ROOM1:00 - 2:00 p.m.
Robert Weldon, G.G., Manager of Photography and Visual Communications. Gemological Institute of America
Beginning - Intermediate - Advanced
An epic story of triumph over adversity, Peter W. Rainier, a South African, ran Colombia's Chivor emerald mine in the 1920s. He fought bandits, chased elusive emerald veins, and rode across the Andes. His story, revealed in his memoir Green Fire, was licensed by MGM for a movie starring Grace Kelly and Stuart Grainger.
Rainer brought Chivor into peak production, extracting the finest emeralds the world had seen. He fought in both World Wars, and helped defeat Rommel's troops at El Alamein. The rediscovery of a lost album of historic photos sparked the idea for a journey to retrace his path.

As you can see the offerings are amazing!  Get the complete listing at www.mjsa.org or http://www.agta.org/tradeshows/gft-seminars.html

Somewhere In The Rainbow presents A Modern Gem and Jewelry Collection, an exhibition presented in collaboration with University of Arizona Mineral Museum, located in the Flandrau Science Center & Planetarium.
“We are thrilled for this collaboration of educational forces in the mineral, gemstone and jewelry world to be experienced and enjoyed. This will be the first time that the Somewhere In The Rainbow Collection will be available to this extent as an educational exhibition and we are honored to share it with U of A and all who visit.” Shelly Sergent, Curator of Somewhere In The Rainbow
A multi-faceted exhibit is opening to the public in Tucson beginning on Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at the Flandrau Science Center & Planetarium. The exhibit will showcase exquisite gems from the Somewhere In The Rainbow Modern Gem and Jewelry Collection. Visitors will experience gemstones from six different countries, marvel at the creations of master artisans, and see minerals still in their raw state before they are cut into gemstones.

Impressive works from twenty lapidary artists and designers, all winners of the coveted Spectrum Award from the American Gem Trade Association, will be on display. Among many amazing specimens, the sapphire named Buddha Blue will dazzle visitors. Faceted in 1400-1500AD, this gemstone inspired Somewhere In The Rainbow to showcase eleven of todays’ top gem cutters. Each of them bring their own style of gem cutting, and the glittering examples illustrate the evolution of cutting styles.

Visitors will also learn about the history of gemology in a display of historical gemological tools that were used to identify and study gemstones through the ages. This collection comes from the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (known as Gem-A) and will feature historical equipment from famous geologist Basil Anderson.

The exhibit will run from February 1, 2017 through January 15, 2018 with paid admission to the Flandrau Science Center & Planetarium.

Rediscovering the Chivor Emerald Mine – In the Footsteps of Peter W. Rainier

Robert Weldon, GIA GG, Manager of Photography and Visual Communications, GIA

An epic story of triumph over adversity, Peter W. Rainier, a South African, ran Colombia's Chivor emerald mine in the 1920s. He fought bandits, chased elusive emerald veins and rode across the Andes.

The Flame Off is an annual torchworking competition at the Sonoran Glass School in Tucson, Arizona where 18 glass artists compete to make the best glass art creation inspired by this year’s theme: “The Textures and Sparkle of Tucson’s Gem Show.”

Now in it’s 16th year, the Flame Off was originally founded by glass artist Tom Philabaum in 2001. The Arizona Daily Star has called the Flame Off a “Top Ten Must See Event of the Gem, Mineral, and Fossil Show” and Zocalo calls it “one of Tucson’s hottest gatherings.”

Your hosts, glass artists Margaret Zinser and Bronwen Heilman invite you to join the crowd and watch as flameworkers go torch-to-torch! Grab a seat in the bleachers and watch the competition in front of you and on HD screens live streaming close ups, while enjoying entertaining and educational commentary on the progress of the artists, their pieces, and the competition.

Competing Artists - This year there will be 18 artists from around the country and one international competitor. Artists will compete in one of two competition sets (7PM or 9:30PM) and will have 90 minutes to complete their entry piece. There will be up to nine artists competing at a time.

First place prize is a A Samurai 3 Stage Torch ($4,325) from Flame Off sponsor Glass Tech Technologies. Second and third place winners receive hundreds of dollars in valuable torchworking supplies and gift certificates from our sponsors.

All competitors have agreed to donate their finished pieces to Sonoran Glass School to be bid on by attendees and the general public. Proceeds support the nonprofit Sonoran Glass School and its educational programming.

Enjoy beer, wine, and a food truck roundup. Explore the Sonoran Glass Art Show tent next door as well. ID is required to purchase alcoholic beverages. This is an all ages event.

About Sonoran Glass School:
